Why read a QR code before using its contents?
You cannot see a QR code's address just by looking at it. The text printed beside it may promise a menu, a document or a Wi-Fi connection without describing what is actually encoded. The QR code reader displays those contents so you can compare them with what you expected.
On a PC, a screenshot saves you from reaching for your phone to scan a QR code received by email or embedded in a document. Paste the image into the page, start reading and retrieve the address or contact details as text.
Decoding proves neither where the QR code came from nor whether its contents are trustworthy. A readable address can lead elsewhere after a redirect. A recipient name displayed in a payment request is still information supplied by that request.
How to use the QR code reader in 3 steps
Step 1: Choose or paste an image
In Image mode, drop your file or use Choose an image. The accepted formats are PNG, JPEG, WebP and GIF. Keep the entire QR code, with a margin around its edges; cropping a screenshot right up to the pattern can make it harder to read.
Paste mode is for screenshots already on your clipboard. Select the area, then use Ctrl+V, or Cmd+V on a Mac. The Paste from clipboard button provides the same access when your browser allows it. Pasting a web address instead of an image does not start a scan.
Camera is the third option, for a QR code on paper or another screen. Access depends on your device and browser permission. If it is unavailable, take a photo and upload the file.
Step 2: Start reading
After choosing or pasting the image, click Read QR code. Your browser sends the file to CaptainDNS servers, which look for QR codes and decode their contents. The preview lets you check the selected image; it is not a reading result.
For the camera, use Start camera and allow access. Successive frames are sent to the server. Keep the QR code sharp and steady: as soon as one QR code is read, capture stops and the result appears. You can also use Stop camera.
If you replace the image after a scan, the old cards fade and a message asks you to decode again. Wait for the new result before copying an address: the old cards belong to the previous file.
Step 3: Examine the contents
Each card shows the recognized type and Raw contents, meaning the text extracted from the QR code. Separate fields make an address, contact or event easier to read. Copy buttons copy the values without executing them.
For a web address, compare the domain and full address with the service you expected. Two buttons then let you follow redirects or check for phishing in the related tools. The reader itself does not visit that address.
Read the banners before copying a Wi-Fi or payment result. The first reminds you that the photo contains the network password; the second flags a payment request whose recipient CaptainDNS does not verify.
What a QR code actually contains
A QR code encodes data in a grid of small squares. A web address is only one possible type of content: the same kind of pattern can hold text, contact details or network settings. Decoding retrieves the data, and the server then identifies the format if it recognizes it.
A QR code containing https://captaindns.com/en/pricing returns that address in the result. The reader does not download the page. A phone number likewise remains text to view or copy, without making a call.
The raw contents provide a reference when the separate fields omit a detail or the format is not recognized. A result classified as text says nothing about its trustworthiness. It only means the reader has no specialized card for those contents.
Supported content types
Cards show the information present in the QR code. A field missing from the original contents will not be invented: a vCard might contain a name and phone number without a postal address, for example.

An image can contain several QR codes of different types. The reader displays numbered cards and flags identical contents. Each card corresponds to a decoded QR code; a pattern that is too small or unreadable may be missing from the result.
Retail product barcodes are not supported. An EAN or UPC code requires a barcode reader, even if it appears next to a QR code on the same package.
Examine an address and its redirects
The encoded address is the starting point for any later navigation. It may respond directly or redirect to another page. The reader displays the extracted text without following that chain or assigning a trust score.
The Follow redirects button opens the redirect checker with the address already filled in. That tool contacts the addresses from our servers to display the steps and the destination reached. Your browser stays on CaptainDNS.
Check for phishing sends the address to the suspicious link checker. This analysis also runs from our servers and looks for threat reports. An absence of reports does not guarantee that a page is trustworthy.
These two checks answer different questions. The chain shows where an address leads at the time of analysis; reports provide information about known threats. Neither confirms that the poster or message containing the QR code really comes from the organization named on it.
Real-world use cases
A QR code in an email to examine on your computer
A message asks you to scan a QR code to view a document. Take a screenshot of the QR code and paste it into the reader. You get the address as text without having to switch to your phone.
Compare the domain with the stated service. If an unexpected message asks you to sign in, confirm the request with the sender through a channel you already know. You can pass the address to your security team without opening it.
A Wi-Fi poster whose settings you need to recover
You have a photo of the guest network's QR code, but no separately written password. Upload the photo to read the network name and its protection type. The password is hidden on screen; Copy password retrieves it without displaying it.
You then choose whether to connect through your device's settings. Before sharing the photo with a colleague, check that they should have access to the network: the QR code already contains the information needed to recover the password.
QR codes to check before printing
A layout contains one QR code for a web page and another for a contact card. Upload an image of the layout to compare the cards with the intended contents. A mistyped name or an old address appears in the result even if the pattern is perfectly readable.
Repeat the scan using a photo of the printed proof. The original file and the paper do not offer the same reading conditions, especially if the QR code is small, colored or placed on a busy background.
A payment request received as an image
A recognized payment QR code displays a warning banner above its contents. Depending on the encoded data, the card shows the payment type, an address, a recipient or an amount. These fields describe the request; they do not confirm its authenticity.
If you were not expecting the request, do not pay. Confirm its origin with your usual contact. The reader makes no transactions and verifies neither the account holder nor the owner of a payment address.
Points to consider
A Wi-Fi photo still contains the password
Hiding the password on screen does not remove it from the QR code. Anyone with a readable image can extract the settings. The Wi-Fi banner reminds you of this before the result fields.
The raw contents' Copy button also includes the password, even when it is hidden in the card. If you only need to share the network name, copy that name separately. Do not paste the full string into a public conversation.
Logos, colors and error correction
A QR code with a logo or decorative shapes can be read if enough data remains for decoding. Error correction adds redundancy: level H tolerates more loss than L, as explained in the DENSO WAVE documentation on error correction.
A QR code with a logo may therefore remain readable at H while a comparable code at L cannot be read. This also depends on the logo's size and the areas it covers. The reader does not guarantee it can read every decorated QR code and cannot reconstruct data beyond the available error correction.
If you have the source file, try a version without a logo or with more contrast in the pattern. Enlarging a small, blurry screenshot does not recreate lost details.
Framing, glare and file formats
Keep the three large corner markers and the margin around the QR code. The standard QR code margin is four modules, or four small grid squares, on each side. DENSO WAVE describes this quiet zone in its sizing guide.
When taking a photo, avoid glare and get close enough to distinguish the pattern's elements. If the file exceeds the displayed limit, crop unnecessary areas without trimming that margin. The reader accepts PNG, JPEG, WebP and GIF; for a QR code in a PDF, take a screenshot of the relevant area.
Personal or single-use links
An address may contain a sign-in token or a personal reference. The reader shows it without visiting it, but sending it to a redirect checker triggers requests to the addresses involved.
For a single-use link, such a request may consume the token, depending on how the destination service works. Examine the contents and the context of the request before starting an additional analysis. Copying an address and asking for it to be analyzed are separate actions.
A failed scan says nothing about the contents
The No QR code found message means decoding did not succeed with this image. It does not mean that the pattern is empty or that the advertised address does not exist. Try a sharper source or a better-framed photo.
A connection error or timeout concerns image processing. If a rate limit is displayed, wait for the stated interval. For a QR code that remains unreadable with the camera, switch to an image file so you can choose a more precise shot.
FAQ - Frequently asked questions
Q: Is reading a QR code free, even without an account?
A: Yes. You can read an image, paste a screenshot or use the camera without signing up or paying. A rate limit protects the service: if you reach it, wait for the displayed interval before trying again.
Q: Are the image and decoded contents stored?
A: No. The image is sent to CaptainDNS servers for decoding, but neither it nor its contents are stored. The reader creates no history. Files you keep and text you copy remain under your control.
Q: Should Firefox save the Wi-Fi password as a CaptainDNS login?
A: No. This is the network password read from the QR code, not a login for this site. The display is designed to avoid prompting the password manager. If Firefox or an extension still offers to save it, decline and use Copy password.
Q: Does the camera open the link as soon as it recognizes a QR code?
A: No. The camera on this page sends frames to our servers and stops as soon as one QR code is read. Its contents appear in a card, without navigating to the address or launching an app. You need to restart the camera for another scan.
Q: How can I read several QR codes on the same poster?
A: Photograph the poster and upload the image: each decoded QR code appears in a numbered card. Identical contents are flagged. Use image mode to compare several QR codes; the camera keeps only one QR code before stopping.
Q: Does CaptainDNS visit the URL inside the QR code?
A: The reader does not visit the URL: it decodes the image and displays the text. Follow redirects and Check for phishing send the address to the related tools, which analyze it from our servers. Following redirects contacts the addresses in the chain; your browser does not visit them.
Q: What if the Paste from clipboard button does not work?
A: Place the cursor in the paste area and use Ctrl+V, or Cmd+V on a Mac. The clipboard must contain an image, not its address or text. If pasting is still unavailable, save the screenshot and select it in Image mode.
Q: Can I use the reader without an Internet connection?
A: No. Decoding takes place on CaptainDNS servers, including for pasted screenshots and camera frames. An image preview on the page does not mean it has been read. Restore your connection, then start reading again.
